SOCKS5 proxies

SOCKS5 is a proxy protocol that forwards any TCP connection, not only web requests, and can resolve domain names on the proxy side so your DNS lookups do not leak. All FuseProxy proxy types, residential, ISP, datacenter and mobile, accept SOCKS5 connections with username and password or IP allowlist authentication.

What is a SOCKS5 proxy?

A SOCKS5 proxy sits between your application and the internet and relays TCP connections. Unlike an HTTP proxy, it does not read or rewrite HTTP requests, so it works with any protocol your application speaks. With the socks5h scheme, the proxy also resolves domain names, so your own DNS server never sees which sites you visit.

How to use a SOCKS5 proxy

With curl, the socks5h scheme resolves DNS on the proxy:

curl -x "socks5h://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT" https://api.ipify.org

In Python with requests (install requests[socks] first):

import requests

proxy = "socks5h://USERNAME:PASSWORD@HOST:PORT"
response = requests.get("https://api.ipify.org", proxies={"http": proxy, "https": proxy}, timeout=30)
print(response.text)

Your dashboard shows the host, port and credentials for each plan. See the authentication docs to use an IP allowlist instead of a password.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is a SOCKS5 proxy?
SOCKS5 is the fifth version of the SOCKS protocol. It relays raw TCP connections between your client and the destination, so it works with any application protocol, and it supports username and password authentication and remote DNS resolution.
Is SOCKS5 faster than an HTTP proxy?
Not noticeably. Both add one hop between you and the target. Choose SOCKS5 when you need non-HTTP traffic or remote DNS, and HTTP when your tool only supports HTTP proxies.
Does SOCKS5 encrypt my traffic?
No. SOCKS5 does not add encryption. Use HTTPS to the destination site, which stays end-to-end encrypted through the proxy.
Which FuseProxy plans include SOCKS5?
All of them. Residential, ISP, datacenter and mobile proxies all support HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5 at no extra cost.
